‘이성을 통해서 발견된 규칙 또는 일반 법칙’ : 자연법(lex naturale)중에서

The first Law of nature

 Every man ought to endeavour peace, as far as he has hope of obtaining it; and when he cannot obtain it, that he may seek and use all helps and advantages of war.

 

 평화를 찾아낼 수 있는 곳에선 평화를 추구하고, 그렇지 못 한 곳에선 전쟁 수단에 의해서 우리 자신을 보호해야 할 것이다.

 

The second Law of nature

A man be willing, when others are so too, as far forth, as for peace, and defence of himself he shall think it necessary, to lay down this right to all things; and be contented with so much liberty against other men, as he would allow other men against himself.

 

평화를 위해, 또한 자신의 방위를 위해 필요하다고 생각되는 한에 있어서, 사람은 여타 모든 사람이 동의한다면 만물에 대한 권리(즉 자연권)를 기꺼이 포기해야만 한다. 그리고 자신이 다른 사람에게 허용한 만큼의 자유에 자신도 만족해야만 한다.

 

The third Law

Men perform their covenants made.

 

모든 사람들은 스스로 그들 사이에 맺은 약속을 철저히 준수하여야만 한다.

 

The fourth Law

A man which receiveth benefit from another of mere grace, endeavour that he which giveth it, have no reasonable cause to repent him of his good will.

 

다른 사람으로부터 은혜를 입은 사람은 은혜를 베푼 사람이 자신의 행동을 후회하지 않도록 노력해야 한다.

 

The fifth Law

Every man strive to accommodate himself to the rest.

 

다른 사람을 기쁘게 하기 위하여, 모든 사람은 자신을 다른 사람에게 적응시키도록 노력해야 한다.
  - 이를 준수하는 경우는 사교적, 반대되는 경우는 비사교적이고 완고하고, 고집이 세다고 부른다

 

The sixth Law

Upon caution of the future time, a man ought to pardon the offences past of them that repenting, desire it.

 

미래에 대한 경고에 근거해서 과거의 죄를 범한 사람이 후회하고 용서를 구한다면 그를 용서해주어야 한다.

 

The seventh Law

In revenges, men look not at the greatness of the evil past, but the greatness of the good to follow.

 

보복에 있어서 사람들은 지나간 악이 큰 것을 보지 말고 앞으로 올 선의 위대함을 보아야 한다.

 

The eighth Law

No man by deed, word, countenance, or gesture, declare hatred or contempt of another.

 

누구든지 행위, 언어, 표정 등에 의해서 다른 사람을 증오하거나 멸시하고 있다는 것을 나타내지 않아야 한다.
  - 이를 위배하는 것을 '오만함'이라 부른다.

 

The ninth Law

Every man acknowledge another for his equal by nature.

 

인간은 누구나 태어나면서부터 평등하다는 것을 인정해야 한다.
  - 이를 위반하는 사람을 '자만하다'고 부른다.

 

The tenth law

At the entrance into the conditions of peace, no man require to reserve to himself any right, which he is not content should be reserved to every one of the rest.

 

평화의 상태로 들어섬에 있어 어느 누구도 다른 사람이 가지고 있으면 만족스럽게 생각되지 않을 권리를 자신만이 가지겠다고 요구해서는 안 된다.
  - 이를 준수하는 자를 '겸손하다'고 부르며, 어기는 사람을 '거만하다'고 부른다.

 

Summary : "너는 너 자신에게 행해지기를 원하지 않는 것을 다른 사람에게 행하지 마라."
